Looking around any waiting room or coffee shop, it\u2019s no surprise that mobile internet usage is set to overtake desktop by 2014 [1]. Now it\u2019s more important than ever to make sure that your mobile site is easily indexed by search engines as well as searchable by your users. Mobile SEO is very similar to desktop SEO, but there are a few differences that you should be aware of when creating your mobile site, especially if you have a mobile-optimized URL of your site along with your desktop-optimized URL.<\/p>\n

Redirects<\/h4>\n

While 301 Redirects are a great way to make sure your users aren\u2019t constantly hitting error pages, mobile sites commonly contain faulty redirects that lead to usability issues. One of the most common types of these faulty redirects on a mobile site is when a user is automatically redirected to the mobile homepage when they type in the URL of an interior site page rather than the mobile version of that page. This causes frustration, usability issues and may result in an increase in bounce rates for your site.<\/p>\n

Page Speed<\/h4>\n

Load time is a big priority for mobile users who are on the go and looking for instant information. Your site is not only competing with your users\u2019 short attention spans, but you\u2019re also competing with slow mobile networks. Make sure your site has a quick load time (this may mean replacing or removing some images on your site).<\/p>\n

Videos<\/h4>\n

Instagram\u2019s latest addition of videos into their platform is a great indicator of where the market is going. People love to watch videos, especially on their mobile devices. Make sure the videos on your site are compatible with the mobile devices your customers are using – this means no Flash for iPhones or Android 4.0 or higher! You may also want to program your site to utilize your visitor\u2019s native video player on their phone.<\/p>\n

Mobile 404s<\/h4>\n

This is not to say that your mobile site can\u2019t have 404 error pages, but your site shouldn\u2019t have mobile-specific 404s. Some companies use these types of 404s because the content on the desktop site cannot be properly displayed on a mobile site. It\u2019s recommended that instead of taking users to a 404 when they try to access one of these pages on your site via mobile, you take them to the desktop version. It\u2019s better to show the user that you have the information, though it may not be optimized, than taking them to a page that will likely lead to them abandoning your site.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n

Due to the increase in mobile internet usage, Google recently announced that they will be focusing more on smartphone search rankings. This means they\u2019ll be looking at your mobile site in terms of redirect, load time, videos, mobile 404s, and more. However, it\u2019s important to remember that mobile SEO is also very similar to desktop SEO: usability is key. Test your site on various devices and make sure your content is relevant and useful to your customers to insure your site will be found in search.<\/p>\n
